So they come with two tools for that : “Beyond RGB” color technology which allows you to fine tune the colors of the image to get rid of uggly too saturated colors and color cast HDR images sometimes lead to, and the “adaptive tone mapping” that optimizes exposure, color, sharpness while preserving the contrast of shadows areas. Well, Unified Color Technology, the editor of HDR Express 2 has understood that most photographers were tired of it and now were expecting a more true to life image look. You know this crazy uggly grunge HDR caricatural look ? That is a devience of the technology which has benn adopted by some to produce what they call “art” when I’d say they just torture their images with the complicity of technology.

You don’t have to look for the right files of an HDR project anymore, the software will do it for you like Autopano Pro does for panned images of a panrama image you wish to stitch. HDR Express 2 gets a new workflow : it automatically detects and stacks bracketted images of a single scene.Neat when shooting HDR around a walking crowd or cars. HDR Express 2 also has a new deghosting algorythm which will erase moving subject ghosts.I will make sure to check this function when I’ll review HDR Express 2 because every single HDR sofware editor comes with its magical solutions for really not so good end results.

While it’s possible to “push” the shadows in a single shot, the result from an HDR blend can be a lot less noisy in the shadows. Noise is random, by nature – so part of Capture One’s algorithm delivers clean shadows as it blends the multiple frames together, removing unwanted noise from any given area. However, there is one other benefit to using the new function with bracketed shots: Noise reduction. (Image credit: Paul Reiffer) (opens in new tab) You can often pull back all the extra shadow detail you need from a single raw file, but this increases the noise, and merging a set of HDR images will give a much cleaner result. Very often, it's possible to use the regular HDR panel within Capture One to recover the dynamic range in a single frame raw file. You don't need to use HDR merge all the time. You may find you need to adjust the HDR sliders to pull down some of the highlights in the final merge, but given it’s a raw image, you can make any such changes to your taste. The output, after processing, will be a DNG file created alongside the images you selected in the browser – and is fully editable just like any other raw file you’ve used. If you shot on a tripod, this shouldn’t be necessary. Auto-Align: While not recommended at the point of capture, if your individual frames moved (or were handheld), Capture One can align them automatically and merge the relevant parts.Auto-Adjust: Do you want Capture One to apply some adjustments to the output raw file to deliver a “middle-exposed” shot with detail in shadows and highlights, or would you prefer to do this yourself?.There is one single dialog box that appears, and this is the only interface you’ll see with the new function, asking two simple questions: Once complete, you’ll select the images you want to blend together, right-click, and select “Merge to HDR”. (Image credit: Paul Reiffer) (opens in new tab)Īfter importing your sequence into Capture One, you’ll need to make any lens corrections up front – diffraction correction, chromatic aberration, light fall-off and so on. There are just two options in the Merge to HDR panel: Auto Adjust and Auto Align.
